My Passion
Cardiothoracic surgery is a challenging field. A Cardiac surgeon should be proficient in Cardiology and surgical skills simultaneously. Many times quick and correct decisions should be taken which can save lives. This specialty demands the best of surgical skills, best of medical knowledge, best of critical care, best of understanding of physiology, best of leadership, best of team work. Therefore a team leader should be calm, composed, know the strengths and weakness of his team members, understand situations quickly and make instantaneous decisions. Unfortunately, the decisions made have a long lasting effect, so a right decision can make a God out of a Surgeon and a wrong one can make him a monster.
Cardiac surgery is one of the latest in Surgical fields, which started only in the 1960s, but made tremendous progress, through constant research and self introspection. CT surgery is also the only faculty that publishes its results in public forum, for every one to see. Despite being a young faculty, our understanding of functioning of heart and body has grown so much that we can treat almost all heart conditions. the final frontier is heart transplant, or artificial heart, which will address any inoperable conditions. Now with latest technology artificial hearts can work for more than 10 years, which is huge achievement for Humanity – as good as landing on Moon.
My goal is to provide best quality treatment to all, irrespective of their financial, social background. to bring the knowledge that I learnt in United Kingdom to India and be useful to the patients where ever I work, for their betterment. My Boss told me once that if you do not train enough juniors, when you need surgery and you are looking for a surgeon to operate on you, it’s too late. So, it’s very important to train and pass on the knowledge gained to the next generation.
There are other challenges other than medical – such as financial, technical etc. there is technology available to treat almost all conditions but the limitation is the cost of these procedures. This is where some thinking and personal effort can reduce the cost of procedures, along with Jugad, without compromising the quality of treatment, so that outcomes will remain same as any other center in the World.
Finally remember Surgeon is also Human, please do not make a God or Satan of him. I believe that I am a scalpel (instrument) in the Hands of God. Instrument can only do what the person handling it can make it do. Having said that what I have in my hands is giving my 100% to the work at hand, which will be given all the time. A famous surgeon said ‘ I Stitch God heals’.
